How to Increase Social Media Engagement Today

When you think about your social media engagement, for a moment, think of it like a cocktail party. You are greeting people, making some small talk, working the room, etc. Perhaps you’re complimenting someone on their outfit, asking about their family, and seeking out those people you might want to spend more time chatting with. If you are looking to increase your social media engagement today, implement this same thought process.

See, social media is so much more than vanity metrics (likes, shares, loves) it’s about finding and making genuine connections. Why? Because it’s these connections that will help grow your business.

You’ve heard it a thousand times before — people buy (and work with) people they know, like and trust. And unfortunately, even with incredible content that you are cranking out — it requires engagement to guide the reader/viewer to a sale.

There is something special to be said about an engaged audience over the size of one.

Keep that in mind.

2 Ways to Increase Social Media Engagement Today

 

Before you dive into the following 2 ways I’m about to share with you take some time to review and analyze your current engagement. It’s helpful to determine your starting point so that you can have a crystal clear idea of where you’re heading. Knowing exactly where you are will help determine the best path, help you in 30, 60 or 90 days when you are reviewing the success/progress of new efforts and, help you decide if there are things you should tweak along the way.

Create an Empathetic Style Post

Empathy definition: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another or self

This type of post is ideal for 1-2 times per week. Remember, you are not seeking sympathy but instead you are demonstrating empathy. Focus on a feeling that someone in your ideal customer or client market would experience. What are the emotions that come from the pain points they have? Consider ones like;

  1. Anger
  2. Sadness
  3. Frustration
  4. Discouraged
  5. Annoyed

… and so on.

Choose that one feeling and create a post that allows you to express understanding of that emotion. The best way to look at this is start with your end goal — what does your product or service solve? Your content should reflect the emotion and, how you can help solve it. Take your reader/viewer through a journey that they will be able to relate to and, seek out that further understanding from you.

Create a Storytelling Style Post

 

Storytelling has been around forever – ever. And, we know that ‘facts tell and stories sell‘, right? So, I would suggest that to increase your social media engagement today — tell a great story to your audience. These posts are also ideally created 1-2 times per week and can always be increased the more comfortable you become.

Here is a short formula to keep in mind when you are creating this type of post;

  1. State the problem
  2. Tell the story
  3. Share the overcoming

 

You are taking your reader/viewer through a story they can 1) relate to and 2) crave the same overcoming. These stories might be of yourself, a client/customer, a friend, etc. This style of post is designed to elicit emotions from the reader/viewer. You want them to be left saying things like ‘wow, this sounds like me!’ and, ‘I need this in my life’.

The best way to format these stories is by avoiding long paragraphs. Use short sentences, double spaced, and avoid the use of too many special characters like emojis or too many exclamation or question marks.

The easier these story style posts are to digest the more effective they are.

Final Note … 

 

In addition to the above mentioned ways to increase social media engagement today remember, when people engage — reciprocate. They have opened the door with a comment or message, don’t leave them hanging. Engagement is a two-way street — I mean, how would you feel walking up to someone at that cocktail party and they just stood and stared at you (you probably wouldn’t seek them out again, right?!)
