I Have No Business Background, Can I Be Successful?
Nobody who starts their first business has experience in starting a business. I wanted to open with this because I know someone reading this — needed to hear it! Now that we have that out of the way — YES you can absolutely be successful in business with no business background but you will need to become a great student.
And I don’t mean student in the traditional sense of the word …
Instead, I’m talking about learning through trial and error, doing things scared, seeking help and mentorship, and willing to put in the WORK.
But guess what?
I can’t think of a better introduction to business than network marketing.
Having No Business Background Could Be Your Best Asset
You might be wondering — how can this possibly be an asset?! Well, the good news is, is that you haven’t developed any poor or bad habits from a previous experience!
Starting a successful business is not always related to your entrepreneurial experience (or lack thereof). Historically, you can find that many of the most successful companies today are started by inexperienced entrepreneurs. It’s been said that you need the right competence when you want to start a business.
The fact that you’re here, reading this — I believe without question you have what it takes.
Having no business background means that your personal and professional contacts are limited to prior industries you’ve worked in. While these contacts could be helpful in certain circumstances down the road, you’ll want to grow your network to include NEW people.
These connections may prove valuable in;
- offering leads
- a basic support system
… and so on.
Seek new contacts through word-of-mouth recommendations, social media groups, or mentorship opportunities. There are literally millions of people online to connect with and the hardest part is actually reaching out.
Play Into Your Strengths
Just because “business” may not be your initial strength, doesn’t mean that the strengths you already possess aren’t as important. For example, my degree is in psychology — the parallel between psych and sales is amazing. I’ve learned to use it to my advantage and as a result, creating greater impact for others.
Think about your current career or past experience … Take some time to jot them down and determine where you can apply these to your network marketing business.
Here are a few questions to ask yourself to get you started;
- What is the most significant knowledge that makes me different from others?
- Can I use that knowledge to build something special for other people?
- When I look at my past, what skills have I developed?
- Can I use those skills to build something special for other people?
- I know that I have no business background, but what other experience do I have that no one else has?
- Can I use those experiences to build something special for other people?
I would love to hear how these questions went for you (feel free to let me know in the comments)
The last point I want to touch on today is this …
DO NOT BE AFRAID to ask for Help!
You’ll be surprised at just how many people out there are willing to help you and your business succeed. From friends or family, to industry experts offering advice, to Facebook Communities — help may only require a simple ask.
I appreciate it can be tough asking others for help but in the business world it’s necessary.
Chances are there are people out there who have overcome an obstacle you’re facing or who can shed some experiential perspective for you — tap into these people. Because one day, you will be able to go on and return the favor.
Overall my simple answer to you today is YES you can be successful even with no business background. I’m excited to see what your business future holds!
